J’ai eu l’occasion de rencontrer Simone Veil à plusieurs reprises. Deux rencontres en particulier, me reviennent en mémoire alors qu’elle vient de nous quitter. A cette occasion, j’ai envie de partager ces moments qui montrent ses engagements en tant que juive et féministe.

I had the opportunity to meet Simone Veil at several occasions. Two encounters, in particular, come to my mind, as she just left us. At this occasion, I would like to share those moments which show her active engagements as a Jew and as a feminist.

Mon premier souvenir marquant avec Simone Veil date de 1992, alors que j’organisais une seconde rencontre entre des femmes palestiniennes et israéliennes suite à la première rencontre publique que nous avions organisé en mai 1989 : « Give Peace a Chance – Women Speak Out ». Le gouvernement Rabin venait d’être mis en place en Israël et l’espoir d’une solution du conflit israélo-palestinien accompagnait nos activités.

My first striking memory with Simone Veil dates 1992, as I was organisign a second encounter between Palestinian and Israeli women following the first public encounter we had organised in May 1989 : « Give Peace a Chance – Women Speak Out ». The Rabin governement had just been put in place in Israel and the hope of a solution of the Israelo-Palestinian conflict accompanied our activities.

Durant ces journées, nous avons mis au point le concept de ce qu’allait être le “Jerusalem Link, a Women’s Joint Venture for Peace” : deux centres de femmes, l’un israélien, basé à Jérusalem-Ouest et l’autre, palestinien, basé à Jérusalem-Est. Ces deux centres indépendants, qui avaient pour objectif de sensibiliser les opinions publiques des deux peuples, à partir de voix de femmes sur les possibilités d’une solution politique du conflit, devaient fonctionner sous l’égide d’un comité de coordination commun, piloté par des femmes telles que Hanan Ashrawi, Leila Shahid, Zahira Kamal du côté palestinien, Naomi Chazan, Yael Dayan, Tamar Gujanski, députées à la Knesset.

During those day, we had discussed and agreed upon the concept of what would become the « Jerusalem Link, a Women’s Joint Venture for Peace » : 2 women’s centers, one Israeli, based in West-Jerusalem and the oterh, Palestinian, based in East-Jerusalem. Those 2 independent centers, which aimed at raising awareness to the public opinions of both peoples, coming from the voices of women, on the possibilities of a political solution of the conflict, were due to wolrk under the sponsorship of a common coordination committaee, led by such women as Hanan Ashrawi, Leila Shahid, Zahira Kamal on the Palestinian side and Naomi Chazan, Yael Dayan, Tamar Gujanski, members of the Knesset.

Nous avions planifié une rencontre publique le 20 septembre 1992, le jour où les Français devaient se prononcer sur le Traité de Maastricht et nous avions invité Simone Veil à intervenir à cette occasion. Nonobstant son engagement en faveur du “Oui” au référendum, elle a pris la route ce soir-là pour soutenir le combat des femmes israéliennes et palestiniennes pour la paix. Elle est rentrée à Paris dans la nuit.

We had planned a public encounter on 20 September 1992, the very day during which the French people had to vote on a refernedum on the Maastricht Treaty and we hae invited Simone Veil to join us and express her support for this initiative. Eventhough she was so busy supporting the « Yes « , she took on the road on this evening to support the fight of Israeli and Palestinian women foe peace. She travelled back to Paris during the night.

Une seconde rencontre mémorable a eu lieu en 1994, lorsque Simone Veil était Ministre d’Etat du gouvernement Balladur. Nous préparions le “Sommet des Femmes de la Méditerranée et d’Europe” qui s’est tenu à Marrakech en mai de cette année et nous avions organisé des réunions préparatoires à Paris. Au cours de l’une d’elles, Simone Veil a rejoint les membres de notre comité autour d’un dîner qu’elle a offert. Elle avait planifié de diriger la délégation française à Marrakech mais en a été empêchée pour des raisons d’agenda. Toutefois, son soutien ne s’est jamais démenti.

A second memorable encounter took place in 1994, when Simone Veil was Minister of State of the Balladur government. We were then in the process of preparing the « Summit of women of the Mediterranean and Europe » which took place in Marrakesh in May and we had organised meetings of the Steering Committee in Paris. During one of those meetings, Simone Veil joined us around a dinner she offered. She had planned to lead the French delegation to Marrakech but she was not able to do so because of a conflicting agenda. Her support to those initiatives has never stopped.

Je suis fière et heureuse d’avoir rencontré cette femme exceptionnelle qui n’a cessé d’exprimer son soutien à une solution pacifique du conflit israélo-palestinien et aux femmes des deux peuples qui tentaient d’influer sur leurs responsables politiques et leurs opinions publiques.

I am proud and happy to have met an exceptional woman who never ceased to expresse her support for a pacific solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and to the women of both peoples who were trying to incluence their political leaders as well as their public opinions.
